Karl Martin Kutser started his career at Telia Estonia as an IT trainee in 2019, following previous work as a cashier in a supermarket. His dedication quickly earned him a full-time position in Customer Support for corporate customers.
“I am very proud and fortunate to have a promising job at Telia. I know many people with similar disabilities face discrimination and exclusion. This is why I want to share my story, to inspire and contribute to a better society,” he says.
Reflecting on his challenges during this journey, Karl Martin notes that he’s been dealing with stereotypes.
“When others constantly disapprove of you or doubt your abilities due to stereotypes, or when you notice they hesitate to ask for your help, it can significantly impact your self-esteem,” he says.
“This, in turn, affects your performance and delivery. Overcoming these challenges has been an ongoing battle for me, but staying inspired and positive has been crucial.”
To understand more about Karl Martin’s experience, we spoke with his manager, Monika Illisson. Monika, who has previously worked with employees with visible functional variations, emphasized the importance of inclusion.
“Everyone deserves a chance to shine. Don’t be afraid of hiring people with functional diversity, because that’s what will help us grow together,” she states.
Karl Martin remains optimistic about his future.
“What keeps me empowered and inspired? I look forward to a beautiful future where I can continue to build my independent life, buy my own place, get a driver’s license, and perhaps find love,” he shares.
